If you’re looking for a new smartphone, Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Z Flip 5 looks interesting with its clamshell design and flagship features. On the other hand, the Google Pixel 7 Pro, one of our best Android phone recommendations, has a non-foldable design but is significantly more traditional and reliable with equally impressive specs. So which of these two phones makes more sense and are there any areas where one outperforms the other? Let’s find out.
Price, availability and specifications
As a foldable phone with high-end specs, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is priced quite high, starting at $1,000 for the 256GB variant. You’ll have to shell out $1,200 for the 512GB variant. That said, all the major carriers are offering significant trade-in credits to buy the phone.
For comparison, the original Google Pixel 7 Pro launched at $899 for the 128GB model, $999 for the 256GB model, and $1,099 for the 512GB model. So you could save big if you choose the Pixel, and possibly even more when the Pixel 8 series launches in October 2023.

Design
Design is the biggest difference between Flip 5 and Pixel 7 Pro. While the Z Flip 5, as you know, is a clamshell-style foldable phone, the Pixel 7 Pro has a traditional bar or slab design with a non-folding display. But there are advantages and disadvantages to both form factors.
When opened, the Z Flip 5 is similar in size to the Pixel 7 Pro. However, when you fold it, the Flip 5 becomes relatively compact and much easier to carry. As smartphone screens get bigger, phones become increasingly difficult to use, and the foldable nature of the Flip 5 helps solve that problem a bit. That said, flexible plastic screens are less durable than glass screens.
In contrast, the Pixel 7 Pro has no moving parts or flexible display, meaning you don’t have to worry about broken hinges or screens. However, it’s worth noting that the foldable phones of 2023 are much sturdier and more durable than their predecessors.
Display
While the Flip 5 has a 6.7-inch full-HD+ OLED main display, you get the same size but higher resolution display (1440p) on the Pixel 7 Pro. Although higher resolution will consume more battery, everything will look much crisper and sharper. Otherwise, the two displays perform similarly, delivering vibrant and punchy images with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The Z Flip 5’s main display is slightly brighter at 1750 nits, but this doesn’t make a huge difference compared to the Pixel 7 Pro’s 1500 nits peak brightness.
However, the 3.4-inch OLED display on the Samsung phone makes things interesting. It’s much more useful than previous Flip series phones and helps you avoid having to open the phone for any small action. In that regard, it scores higher than the Pixel.
Performance and battery
Samsung has equipped the Galaxy with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 2 chip with 8GB of RAM in the Z Flip 5, while you get the Tensor G2 with 12GB of RAM in the Pixel 7 Pro. Both are powerful chips and as a result, both phones deliver solid performance with no lag or stuttering. On paper, the amount of RAM on the Flip seems less than the Pixel, but it doesn’t affect how the phone works.
Power efficiency is one area where the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 beats the Tensor G2. This greatly helps Flip 5 in terms of battery life. And despite only having a 3,700mAh battery, the phone has no trouble getting through the day with typical usage. On the Pixel, you also get all-day battery life with the larger 5,000mAh battery.
Additionally, you will be happy to know that both the phones offer fast and wireless charging. And any of our best phone charger recommendations will help boost your phone to top speed.
Camera
Samsung’s foldable phone may have some advantages over the Pixel 7 Pro in other aspects, but Google’s phone is the clear winner when it comes to cameras; The Pixel 7 Pro is definitely a better camera phone than the Z Flip 5. So if that’s something that’s on your list of deciding factors, take a close look at the Pixel.
Samsung usually equips its flagship devices with excellent cameras – with the exception of the Flip series phones. Although the Flip 5 has good cameras, they are not on the same level as the Pixel. The good news is that the foldable form factor of the Samsung phone allows you to take selfies with the rear camera, which is much better than the front camera on the phone.
In terms of specifications, you get a 12 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10 MP selfie camera on the Flip 5. On the other hand, the Pixel 7 Pro has a 50 MP main camera, a 48 MP telephoto camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide camera. camera and 10.8MP selfie camera.
Software
You’ll notice software differences between the two phones as the Flip 5 uses Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1; otherwise, the base Android version will be the same as Android 13. Your software experience won’t be significantly different.
In terms of updates, Google Pixel phones are usually the first to receive any security updates or major Android revisions, but Samsung doesn’t take long either, at least when it comes to flagship phones. your level. The Pixel 7 Pro is almost a year old, which means it will only get guaranteed OS updates until October 2025 and security updates until October 2027. For comparison , Galaxy Z Flip 5 will receive guaranteed OS updates until August 2027 and security updates until August 2027. August 2028.
Which phone should you buy?
As mentioned at the beginning of this comparison, much of your decision between the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Google Pixel 7 Pro will come down to your choice of form factor: do you prefer a phone that can foldable, especially one that doesn’t give you access to a giant screen when unfolded? Do you take a lot of selfies and are intrigued by the ability to take selfies with the Z Flip 5’s main camera? If you answered yes then the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a great choice. It’s fast, has a vibrant display, and will receive software updates for years.
