This year’s AFL final series will be very interesting…if you believe the predictions of AgeBot-empelli’s own future football forecaster.
That’s right, our sports department has turned to the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence to prophesy the finals.
The good news for football fans is “The Bot,” as he is affectionately known (we chose to name it after a Brownlow Medal favorite rather than calling it James). Robot-M after the Sydney midfielder) is predicting a series of exciting finals.
In fact, according to this high-tech crystal ball, there will be no matches in week one of the final series, and all matches will be decided by 20 points or less.
Bot-empelli is armed with a complete list of the results of the 2023 season and carefully considers each final. Let’s take a look at the predictions it makes and how they compare with those made by our resident football experts especially our top player, AFLW top player , Libby Birch and sports scribe Jon Pierik.
Then let’s see how The Bot expects the rest of the series to play out.
First qualifying round final
Collingwood v Melbourne
MCG
7:20 p.m., Thursday, September 7
Summary: “Thursday night Dee-light. Melbourne before 20.”
Jon Pierik says: “Melbourne is more than 5 points. It looks like a classic, but Gawn and Petracca make the difference against an opponent that lacks Nick Daicos.”
Libby Birch says: “Melbourne is over nine points. Closed early, but Melbourne will come back strong with the help of their upbeat midfield.”
First elimination finals
Carlton in Sydney
MCG
7:50 p.m. Friday, September 8
Summary: “Dah, de-dah, de-daah… Baggers in horror movies.”
JP says: “Carlton two more points. It’s going to be a horror movie, but I think The Blues will have too much offensive firepower for the Swans.”
LB says: “Carlton over five points. Their form was too good at the end of the season.”
Second elimination finals
St Kilda v Greater Western Sydney
MCG
3:20 p.m. Saturday, September 9
JP says: “St Kilda one point. The Saints knew they needed to turn this into a struggle against the Giants with the Wheel of Freedom.”
LB says: “St Kilda nine points. The Giants have star power but the Saints have Ross Lyon.”
Second qualifying round final
Brisbane Lions v Port Adelaide
Gabba
7:25 p.m. Saturday, September 9
Summary: “Gabbattoir is a fortress. Lion with a straight kick.”
JP says: “Brisbane is up 10 points. It’s hard to dispute Chris Fagan’s claim that this is the Lions’ best chance of winning the title since he joined the club.”
LB says: “Brisbane is up 12 points. They’ve been quiet performers all year long and have a lot to strive for after last year’s disappointing preliminary final.”
Notes
Of course, like many services in this day and age, Bot-empelli predictions come with a disclaimer (some may use the term disclaimer). In fine print, it states the following terms and conditions: “Remember that in sports there is always an element of unpredictability and any team can win a surprise victory on a certain day. determined.”
Second week: Semi-finals
With two Sydney teams eliminated (robots would probably prefer the phrase “destroy… destroy”) and Melbourne and Brisbane heading straight from the qualifiers finals to the weekend’s preliminary finals, The Bot had a few up. dream match in week two.
Good luck to anyone trying to land a ticket to the epic semi-final between Collingwood and Carlton at the MCG. It will be huge.
First semi-final
Collingwood v Carlton
MCG
Summary: “Watch out for Lygon Street, the Blues are in the preliminary round, and the Pies have lost in a row.”
Second semi-final
Port Adelaide v St Kilda
Adelaide Stadium
Summary: “We will never stop, stop, stop… that’s Port by 20.”
Third week: Preliminary Finals
Now it’s time for everyone’s final. If AI’s prediction plays out, Melbourne will host Port Adelaide at the MCG and Carlton will hit the road against Brisbane at Gabba. See how The Bot predicts that will happen.
First Preliminary Final
Melbourne v Port Adelaide
MCG
Summary: “Reserve champions in the chalet, the Devil wins 10 and becomes a grandmother.”
Second Preliminary Final
Brisbane Lions v Carlton
Gabba
Summary: “The Lions won by less than a goal, advancing to their first major final since 2004.”
Grand Finals
So it all leads to this. If the above predictions are true, this series of finals will be the best finale of all time. There have been 8 matches so far – 6 of which have been demarcated by less than 2 goals and none of them by more than 20 points. Now, all we need is a final match to end the season in this stand.
Away from football, party cupcakes and popcorn, it’s time for the virtual AFL finals.
Final match
Melbourne v Brisbane Lions
MCG
2:30pm, Saturday, September 30
Summary: “MC Gee, what a great win! Devil fans can celebrate the grand final victory.”
