Update: Thursday, September 7. While we wait to see what happens with Android 14, Google has confirmed that the Made by Google event will introduce the Pixel 8 phone in a teaser video was posted earlier today. Presumably, this is being used as the overall name given the prospect of both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launching on October 4.
Also shown in the trailer is a new smartwatch, presumably the Pixel Watch 2 and the stylish Pixel Buds Pro 2.
As expected, one of the two leaked colorways was featured prominently in the video. The leaked “Porcelain” colorway that first appeared on one of the Google Store’s internal pages last week has been heavily showcased. What we don’t see is any software running on the Pixel 8’s screen.

Many of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro’s improvements will be found in the software. With the two handsets expected to be among the first to run Android 14, more apps and services will be built on top of the Android 14 codebase. This is all the more interesting when Google decided to delay the release of the source code of Android 14.
The expectation is that the release version of Android 14 will be published on September 5th via the Android Open Source Project page, at which point the software will be ported through the ecosystem, possibly as small projects according to preferences for multinational manufacturers. Mishaal Rahman reports that the delay is due to a security vulnerability in the latest Android Security Release Notes that will be published on October 4… the day many consider to be the new launch date of Android 14 and also the day before the Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 professional launch event.
The delay in the final release wasn’t entirely unexpected; Google released an unscheduled fifth beta for Android 14 in mid-August, suggesting that more work and more testing is needed. This delay supports that.
What will happen to other manufacturers planning to launch their own operating systems based on Android 14 (such as OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14, which was announced last week to launch on September 25). 9) remains to be seen.
However, this will be the first Pixel launch to sync with the release of the Android Open Source Project code. Most likely the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will go on sale immediately after the event – most manufacturers will open pre-orders at an event, followed by a staggered release across various regions and Google will be no different.
That took Google a few weeks to prepare an over-the-air update for Android 14 with the latest security fixes and latest software updates.
Now read about Google’s long-term plans to support the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro…
