VR news of the week
As part of a weekly series, Android Central Senior Editors Michael Hicks and Nick Sutrich are rounding up all the hardware news, game announcements, leaks, and related exciting updates to Meta Quest 3, Oculus Quest 2 and other VR headsets.
We’re just three weeks away from the Meta Quest 3 launch, with official accessories already leaking ahead of Connect 2023. But VR fans have plenty of leaks about future hardware to look forward to. distracting them until then.
In addition to Meta’s second attempt at the Quest Pro with the Apple Vision Pro in its sights, we also heard a rather surprising rumor that Nintendo is returning to the VR space with a proper mixed reality headset, running Android software.
Here’s what’s happening in the world of VR this week!
Oculus Quest 2 accessories may not work with Quest 3
A leaked photo of the Quest 3 strap shows it measuring 29.5mm wide, compared to 27mm on the Quest 2. Because of this change, it’s very likely that all existing Quest 2 straps will not work with Quest 3.
For those buying high-end bands with batteries, this is a disappointment; For Quest accessory makers, that means a whole new generation of profits.
As for official Meta accessories, a Reddit leak shows what appears to be the official cart of the Quest 3 512GB version, Elite Strap with Battery (€149), Carrying Case (€79), Interface silicone side (€49) and Charging Dock (€149).
Just saw this on Reddit. Let’s first see the Quest 3 accessories and the 512Gb version? Very interesting. pic.twitter.com/odqthbXSFNSeptember 4, 2023
All of these are available for the Quest 2, but the Quest 3 versions see quite a price increase – obviously depending on regional differences. In theory, the Quest 3 should easily fit in the Quest 2’s case because its pancake lens makes it smaller. But the old faceplates probably won’t fit, and since the Quest 3 is said to have put its USB-C slot in a new location, the Quest 2’s old charging docks might not work either.
This Reddit leak also has a list of specs, and while most of the information is already known to the public, it specifically says the Quest 3 will have 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye instead of the 1,920 x 1,832 on Quest 2.
Nintendo x Google VR?
🔥Leak Express: Nintendo already has a prototype to test “VR” glasses – Switch 2 independent hardware – Mixed reality – Home use, not for theme parks – MicroLED screen – What’s surprising Of course, Google is also involved in some way in the image development process. twitter .com/e60yNchmsySeptember 3, 2023
We have to trust this kind of rumor blindly, but a leak no longer known on Twitter recently indicated that Nintendo is developing a standalone mixed reality headset specifically for gaming at home (aka not for the Nintendo theme park). ) and that Google is involved with its software.
Google’s involvement is not surprising. We know that Google is working on several XR prototypes, along with the underlying XR software platform that Samsung will use for its own headsets next year. Android Police reports that it has found code evidence of Google’s Micro XR platform being deployed, so Google will likely sell the software to other gaming companies interested in VR.
Nintendo has its own long history with VR, starting with the Virtual Boy console in 1995 and most recently with the Nintendo Labo cardboard. Since Sony already has its own PSVR 2 headset, Nintendo may want to try and keep up in this space.
Despite all of this, we’d recommend waiting for proof rather than a cutely rendered model before you pin your hopes on a Nintendo VR headset that actually features Google’s software.
Earlier this year we learned that Quest Pro 2 was canceled, but Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth later explained that it was only because that thing Just because the Pro 2 prototype has been canceled doesn’t mean the Pro line is dead forever. Now, it seems Boz isn’t just trying to downplay the negative news.
According to a report earlier this week, Meta has partnered with LG to produce OLED Microdisplay panels for the Quest Pro 2. In addition, the report also confirmed that Meta will charge $2,000 for this headset – $500 more. than the original Quest Pro but $1,500 less than the original Quest Pro. Apple Vision Pro – and launching in 2025.
We hope that by the time the Quest Pro 2 launches, there will be more and better software available to make productivity headsets a more viable business model. Mainly because Apple will attract companies that Meta cannot, thanks to its computing connectivity.
New and upcoming VR games
The list of upcoming Oculus Quest 2 games is heating up as we inch closer to fall. My VR-loving friend Nick Sutrich recently wrote about four of his favorite games that he recommends everyone play before Quest 3 comes out, starting with Inverse.
The Dead by Deadlight gameplay combines with the Stranger Things aesthetic to create Inverse, a 1v4 asymmetrical horror title that Nick and I both had the chance to play and both thoroughly enjoyed. It launches Thursday on the Quest Store.
“While this monster is extremely powerful and can kill the player with just a few swipes, it moves quite slowly and has a stamina bar that needs to be refilled after a few attacks,” Nick wrote. labour”. “Meanwhile, unarmed players can not only revive fallen players, but can also set traps, close doors, and place obstacles in the path of monsters. In addition, thanks to the combination Cleverly combining local communications and walkie-talkies, players can work together intelligently to outwit the monster and wipe out all traces of The Inverse.”
You should also check out his other recommendations: Dead Hook, I Expect You to Die 3, and Swordsman.
Announced and available for pre-order this week, Dungeons of Eternity is another collaborative experience for D&D and Demeo fans – which coincidentally has been announced as a future Apple Vision Pro title in this week.
Back to DoE: it’s a hack-and-slash style dungeon crawler with swords, bows, magic, etc., with procedurally generated dungeons keeping things fresh . You can play solo, but it seems like it would be especially rewarding to play in a group.
Finally, we’re big fans of Walkabout Mini Golf’s stable of new DLC products like Labyrinth and Myst. The latest DLC – Alfheim: Land of the Elves – isn’t featured in any popular IP but has a charming aesthetic intended to appeal to fans of Norse Mythology (and perhaps fans of Lord of rings too). On the Quest Store, you can purchase the course for $4, while new buyers can purchase the bundle and get half the price.
